Recap of Games played 10/28 and 11/4 at HASTINGS;4 games played with 18 players each week.
in game 1 10/28 it was Gil vs Dave in the opener on the small field with left field uphill and coppice in center field the hated coppice for the pitchers. The game seasawed until Gils team broke it open;Lawrence had a big hit over the right center .
In game 2 Havelock got his 15th win as he beat Gil ;both teams rallied and it was ugly at times with bickering. On 11/4 we played at the big field and it was in perfect condition. The grounds keepers had been there and in game 1 Havelock created a theme game ;oldest or near oldest in family of origin vs youngest in family of origin. Amazingly it worked out with Connor pitching for older had 10 players and Hewes pitching for younger had 9 players.Younger was home team and they were beaten by a score of 23-9.In game 2 pretty much same teams with slight modifications and Dave pitched for home team and Gil for Visitors. Gil 's led 7-0 through 3 but Dave's came back with 3 and the game ended with a score of 7-3.Both teams faced attrition was the NE Pats vs Indy Colts approached and this hurt Home team from having the added offense to beat Gils team. As the season is comming to a close with a few weeks left Irecommend some winter reading to well round you folks;Literature is a great cure for what ails;I can never over recommend Balzac his short stories and novels;Go to the STRAND and look for some ;also read Arthur Miller-The Price,All My Sons, death of a Salesman; and read Melville-Billy Budd mentioned earlier in this pages; a masterpiece short story and Somerset Maughan and The Ballard of the Sad Cafe by Carson McCuller;enough said see you @Hastings.

opening day at hastings 10/21/07
2 games :mud and elan
24 players competed in game 1 with Appell pitching for home team and Hewes for the visitors. The field was muddy down first base line and behind
2nd but it was decided to play there instead of adjacent smaller field.Appell was pounded for 19 hits and 12 runs but only 1 earned run.His team erred
but he gave up hits after the errors and it cost runs.Hewes got his 14th Win
of the season allowing 1 earned run and 3 runs and 9 hits. In game 2 I was
traded to the losers and pitched and Jim O'Connor pitched for the visitors.
In this contest Visitors led 3-1 end of 6.With nine on a side late in the game
the 7th was the exciting inning.Looking for insurance the visitors batted. The
first 2 batters flied out quick then a single then Hewes laid a drag bunt up
the first base line and it died in the mud puddle as Rosengard fell in the
mud puddle trying to pick it up and toss to Weinberg,Hewes reached and Rosengard walked back to hill a few poinds heavier with mud and muddy
mitt but amid threats of no ride to 96thstreet Rosengard focused on getting
out of the jam. After a few careful pitches to Sullyman he lost him to a
walk and loaded the bases then facing David Sommers he got him out on
a hard smash to 3rd fielded by David Hersh who stepped on 3rd to force the runner and end the inning. With spirits high Home team faced a 2 run
deficit and put up 3 runs to win it. Pyne walked,Jaime Orichino tripled
to left center scoring Pyne, now 3-2, then David Hersh sac flied in Jaime
to tie it.Now with bases empty O'connor's team now facing the bottom of the order with 2 lowaverage hitters,Rosengard and Lee,Jim was probably thinking extra inninngs but Rosengard singled to right,Lee singled to Right and Schuman singled to right. With bases loaded and Ian Parfrey at bat visitors brought in their outfield and Ian hit a fly ball to shallow right but
over Make Martins glove a 4th single scoring Rosenagrd from 3rd to
end it. IP R ER H BB SO

September 16, 2007:
Season In Central Park ends with a triple header. Hewes drew up teams and 24 competed.
Game 1 was Gil's team vs. Dave's team .Rosengard got through the 1st while Schmerler (9-7) gave up 7 runs in the 1st.With this lead Rosengard(15-15) had a no hitter thru 4 and gave up 4 the rest of the way pitching a 3 hitter and won 8-4.Rosengard's team had great defense and turned double plays and ground ball outs while Gils's team after a shaky 1st inning that included a couple of key errors settled down but the big damage was insurmountable considering a no hitter thru 4 innings. After the game Gil told me if we take away the first inning his team would have won 4-1.
In Game 2 they proved that they could win . Hewes pitched for the winners and they were the visitors and Appell pitched for the losers and they were the home team .Hewes team scored 3 in the 1st but this time Appell's team shut down Hewes's team and went on to win it 12-4. Appell pitched well changing speeds and location and he had great defense behind him and great offense as Hewes was into jams most innings. Hewes in the early innings was leaving the ball over the plate and was pounded with deep shots to the outfield. Appell improved to 6-3 while Hewes fell to 12-15.
In game 3 Loarte and Connor pitched and Connor's team won 7-3. In the early frames the game was close knotted 1-1 and then 2-1 but Loarte was hit hard, leaving the ball in the middle of the plate giving up home runs and Connor nibbled at the corners and threw arc pitches that broke over the plate and Connor was able to get alot of pop ups and fly outs exactly his kind of game. It was hard to judge his pitches and Connor was often steamed at the umpire but he kept his cool. There were hardly any ground ball outs and the outfielders were getting a work out with their arms and legs .Weinberg was vocally exhorting his team to take extra bases and on defense playing smart.
Next week we play on the EAST RIVER probably viewing the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges ,and we play for 4 Sundays there at E12th Street and the River. We are so lucky to get a permit there it should be exciting, see you next week.

September 9, 2007:
Game 1 Rosengard's home team beat Hewes's visitors 5-3 in 7. Dave (14-15)got the win. In the 6th with a 3-3 tie Marvin Cohen drove in 2 runs with a line drive to right, hitting to opposite field and behind the runners, Cohen was out at first 7-3 but 2 runs scored to make it 5-3. Defense was instrumental in this win with Geoghan making a great catch off a shot to the trees in left to kill a rally and in another inning Phil Ciccone made a catch of a popup in shallow left with his back to the infield and turned and fired a strike to Ben Indek at 2nd to complete a double play and end another rally. Hewes (12-14) pitched a 6 hitter with this loss.
In Game 2 Loarte vs. Schmerler. In this contest Gil 's team led 5-0 with hits and wildness by George but Loarte's team rallied with 3 in the 6th as George held off Gil's team and in the 7th Loarte's team had the tying runs on with no outs but Gil pitched out of it giving up 1 run and got Carl to pop out leaving the tying and winning runs on. A nail-biter at the end.

August 26th a triple header.
Hewes wins games 2 and 3 as he evens his record to 12-12. In the opener Rosengard (13-15) took the loss by a score of 6-4.In this close contest Schmerler(7-6) got the win as he pitched out of jams and had great defense. Rosengard pitched well, a 10 hitter not his best but errors cost him the game.
In Game 2 Appell(5-3) took the loss giving up 7 runs in the 1st and Hewes got the win by a score of 9-3.
In game 3 Hewes got another win as he pitched a shutout thru 6 innings and he beat Connor who took the loss. In the 7th the shut out was broken as Rosengard led off reaching on an E-5 and taking 2nd on the wild throw to Marvin at 1st;Lee followed driving in Rosengard and ending up on 3rd and he was driven in by the next batter and that was all.
As I write this the Mets were beaten by Phillies 11-10 5th loss in a row and Bosox were swept at Yankee Stadium all this afternoon. The way I handle the Bosox loss is to think of baseball as entertainment and I remember all season long listening to WTIC in Harford to Radio Broadcasts of the 135 games so far. I started to listen to Redsox games in the 1940's in Providence RI when the games were broadcast and you could hear the tickertape sound during the away games. Anyway I return to Providence RI this weekend to take my daughter to College at Brown University so I will play again 9/9/07, Have good sunday.

Games of August 19th 2007
Game 1 Home team beats visitors 9-6 in 7. Here is the line score: Team 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E Rosengard had a shaky 1st giving up 4 runs and 7 hits but then Vis 4 0 0 0 0 0 2 6 10 1 settled down with strong defense and pitched out of a 7th jam Home 1 2 3 0 0 3 x 9 14 0 to win it. Back to back singles led to the 4 run 1st by visitors and home team took the lead on a key double by O'Connor in the 3rd and led 6-4 and added 3 in the 6th for insurance very important for in the 7th as Visitors rallied scoring 2 but felt short as the home team won. Rosengard (13-14) got the Win his 3rd straight and Hewes (NA) took the loss.
In Game 2 here is the line: Team 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H Appell pitched for the home team and Schmerler for the Vis 3 1 3 0 0 0 2 0 0 9 14 visitors. End of 3rd the visitors led 7-5 and Home team tied it Home 1 3 1 0 0 2 0 0 3 10 15 at 7 with a homer from Fred Lang and a triple following that homer by Lee. Visitors took a 9-7 lead in the 7th as the bottom of the order pushed across 2 runs as Weiss slid home behind Rosengard and Appell took it on the shin as he blocked the plate. Appell put up 2 goose eggs in the 8th and 9th and in the bottom of the 9th hit a bases loaded double down the left field line to clear the bases and win it 10-9. Appell got the Win and Schmerler took the loss.

august 12th 2 games played
Game #1 Rosengard's home team wins the opener 6-4. Home team scored early in the 1st with 4 runs before an out was recorded. Then Gill held the offense to 2 runs the rest of the way. I won the game because of great defense; Joe Geller made some great plays at 3rd while Gabe Hernandez was scooping up every ground ball hit to him and chasing pop ups in center and left field.
In Game 2 teams were the same and Havelock pitched for the home team and Rosengard for the visitors. Final score 8-6. Rosengard's team was losing 6-3 end of 4th. Home team scored 4 to take the 3 run lead. Then Rosengard's team came back in the 5th tying the game at 6 all. Lawrence tripled and Gabe Hernandez hit a 2 run homer. In the 6th Visitors rallied for 2 more Lawrence got on and Rosengard was out and Lee bunted safely and Gabe Hernandez drove in 2 with a double and Visitors took an 8-6 lead and great defense again sealed the win for Rosengard's team. They were great games with drama, long counts, I was hit by a line drive off the bat of Leibowitz, Cohen kept hitting line drives to shallow left that dropped in and kept rallies going. There were some great outfield catches by Lawrence, Weiss, Hall, Hewes, and Lang in right slapping the glove after making catch. The three aces of our league pitched their best and I was lucky to come out of it with 2 wins. I did this from memory so some of the details may be slightly off but they were great games.

Games on August 5th 2007
Game 1 saw 24 players with Rosengard(10-14) vs Schmerler (n/a). In this game Schmerler's team won it I think by a score of 6-2. Rosengard's team erred in one inning giving up 2 unearned runs on a wild throw from right, home. Wins are often elusive like faith in something like religion, friendships and marriages. WE go out each Sunday morning hoping for a win for our team and sometimes we wind up not knowing the outcome all game, all 7 innings and other times we feel the game slipping away early on. I felt we would come back late in the game and win it but Schmerler kept changing speeds and rallies were wiped out.
In Game 2 Hewes pitched against Appell and Appell's team won it 6-2. Appell gave up 3 hits all game for the Win. Hewes pitched well also and gave up 4 unearned runs in one inning. PEOPLE IN THE GAME; Glen Lawrence returned after being away abroad and Lee came back after away a month in Japan. Kotik returned to the lineup and Mike Palma has been absent for a couple of weeks. Grieco was moving to NJ and has not returned for a few weeks. Anthony Connor returned and Alex returned to the game after being away at College in Arizona. Weather looks good for this Sunday August 12th see you then.

Games on Sunday 7/29/07
Game 1 It was a low scoring game with 23 players. Rosengard (10-12) got the W giving up 2 runs in the first and shut out rest of the way Hewes took the Loss and also pitched well. Rosengard's team was trailing 2-0 and came back with 1 to make it 2-1 end of first. Hewes pitched out of jams a couple of times and Rosengard's team could not get the big hit ,Hewes had great defense with Gabe at 3rd and Phil at SS and Ricky in Left but the reason Rosengard's team won was defense . Paul Geoghan made a great catch in left off Ciccone's deep drive into the trees and Lang made 2 great catches in Right and Weiss played great center field. Ivan played 3rd and Vernick played first and Schmerler played 2nd so people where coming thru and in the 7th Hewes team had the tying run on 2nd with one out and Jim O'Connor lined out hard to short and doubled up the runner to end it.
Game 2 was same teams and Jim O'Connor took the hill for the visitors and Rosengard tried to pitch a 2nd game on this steaming July morn. Visitors scored 3 in the 1st, big hit was a homer by Ciccone. In the 2nd Visitors added 1 more run and home team made a pitching change in the 3rd. Derek Martinez took the hill and quieted down the visitors offense but O'Connor pitched brilliantly and he got the win, final score 5-2.

Games of July 22, 2007
Idealism #2
As a follow up to last weeks View this week the situation returned to normal with Rosengard finally getting a Win and Hewes finally getting a Win. Charlie the rabbit stopped stealing wins and returned home and both pitchers pitched effectively behind great defense and Rosengard(9-12) pitched a 6 hitter and Schmerler(5-4) took the loss. Rosengard's home team scored 2 on walks and base hits and led till the 5th when Gil's team scored 3 to lead 3-2.But in the 6th Home team rallied with a key triple by Gabe Hernandez and scored 2 to regain the lead 4-3 and it held up.
In Game 2 Hewes (10-8) got the win pitching a shutout through 5 and then gave up 2 to win it 11-2.Back to back homers in the 3rd, a 3 run shot by Phil Ciccone and solo by Weinberg gave Hewes' visitors a 6-0 cushion and they added more leading 9-0 then Appell's team broke the shutout scoring 2 and Hewes team added 2 more to win it 11-2. Appell(3-2) took the loss.

Author Rosengard will buy a cup of hot/cold tea at the Ballfield Cafe for anyone who can decipher the dense allegory below. (hint: This past week Havelock awarded the coveted "Hamlet" to Marvin for his consistently fair and impartial indecision as an umpire.) (Hint number two: Rosengard grew up in Providence, RI.)

IDEALISM
Billy Budd and Hamlet both grew up in America, One in Providence and one in NYC where the pasttime was baseball and a variation called softball invented 900 miles due west of NYC in the 1800s.The time when the first Billy Budd was alive and was on the HMS Bellipotent.Billy Budd and Hamlet could no longer get Ws in Sunday mornings and instead got losses each sunday even after only giving up 3 runs in 11 innings and 2 runs in 6 innings. Long before this problem arose they started to write I need a Win on the their gloves in large black ink that did not fade, but to no avail. They even carried around in their right front pocket a 1963 US dollar Coin and looked at it to give them solace. One day they had their usual hot tea cold tea at the ballpark cafe where Mr. Oswald was a waiter and moonlighting as a rabbit catcher. This particular day Mr. Oswald had a beautiful black rabbit it a cage that belonged to two pretty girls in Whitestone. Mr.Oswald was dressed in Kaikke shirt and pants and was keeping the rabbit a prisoner because he stole Ws from Billy Budd and Hamlet and Mr. Oswald was planning to kill the rabbit once he exposed him to Billy Budd and Hamlet. Mrs. Oswald, a therapist a rather empathic and middleaged woman told her husband not to kill the rabbit and she told Billy Budd and Hamlet the reason they had no Ws usually a thing a therapist does not tell her patients but Billy Budd and Hamlet were not her patients and she wanted to help them. The rabbit could talk and he pleaded for his l;ife and promised never to steal wins again if he could go back to the two pretty girls in Whitestone. All agreed but the Rabbit who was called Charlie said he wanted to tell Billy Budd and Hamlet a darkness within them. Then to told Billy Budd that he knew Death from the HMS Bellipotent and that he was sad John Kennedy and his idealism was killed in November 1963 and he told Hamlet that he was sad over Ophelia's death and also Kennedy's death and that has to read THE DEATH OF A PRESIDENT BY WILLIAM MANCHESTER. Hamlet agreed and Billy Budd and Hamlet felt better and felt they could get a W again. The RESULTS OF 7/15/07;GIL'S VISITORS WIN 8-3 IN 5 RUN 12TH TO DEFEAT DAVE'S HOME TEAM; HIGHLIGHTS; GREAT DEFENSE BOTH TEAM UNTIL HOME TEAM UNRAVELED IN 12TH CAPPED BY 3 RUN HOMER BY PHIL CICCONE; NIGHTCAP 3-2 IN 7 O'CONNOR OUT DUELS HEWES IN THIS NAILBITER.

GAMES ON JULY 8TH CENTRAL PARK 2 CONTESTS
IN GAME 1 GIL'S TEAM WINS IT 10-8 IN THIS HARD FOUGHT CONTEST GILS TEAM LED MOST OF THE WAY AND ROSENGARD'S TEAM TIED IT IN THE 8TH AT 8-8.IN THE TOP OF THEN 9TH THE VISTORS ADDED 2 MORE AFTER 2 OUTS WITH BLOOP POP UP IN THE INFIELD THAT DROPPED IN AND AND A COUPLE OF INFIELD ERRORS. ROSENGARD LOST HIS 11TH(8-11).DEFENSE IF BIG I N THESE CONTESTS.
IN GAME 2 APPELL TOOK THE MOUND; SAME TEAMS AND APPELL VS HEWES. THIS WAS A CLOSE CONTEST ANDAPPELL'S TEAM WON IT 4-3.MIKE PALMA AND FRED LANG WERE FLAWLESS IN THE OUTFIELD AND APPELL HAD A GOOD INFIELD. HEWES'S TEAM ALSO WERE SEAMLESS IN THE INFIELD AND OUTFIELD.FOR APPELL'S TEAM THE BOTTOM OF THE ORDER CONTRIBUTED BIG WITH SINGLES AND PATIENCE AT BAT TO PUSH ACROSS ENOUGH TO WIN IT. THE RESULT COULD OF GONE EITHER WAY; IT WAS THAT CLOSE A CONTEST OF 9 INNINGS IN THE HEAT. PHIL CICCONE SHOWED A LOT OF CLASS AS HE FIELDED A HOT GROUNDER DEEP AT SHORT AND RACED TO 2ND AND FIRED TO FIRST. THE UMPIRE CALLED PALMA OUT AT 2ND IT APPEARED FROM BEHIND THE PLATE THAT HE TAGGED THE RUNNER PALMA BUT PALMA PROTESTED AND THAT'S WHEN PHIL SAID PALMA WAS SAFE AND THAT HE DID NOT WANT TO WIN THAT WAY, A LOT OF CLASS.

6/25/07 Recap of the June games: Triple PLay highlights the games on the 24th as Sommersstarts a triple play to help Rosengard out of a jam going 6--4-3.Sommers tagged the runner going to 3rd and fired to Kostner at 2nd and she fired to Kotik at first to complete it.Schmerlers team won the game 8-4.In the 2nd game Hewes team won in the late innings after a 8-8 tie in the 7th and won it 14-8.On June 17th there was a big turnout with about 32 players so Hewes drew up 4 team and we used 2 fields and played 4 games.Kostner won the opener against Rosengard in 9 innings in the regular field and hewes won the opener in the field at the end of right field beating kotik 10-4.Then the winners played the winners and losers the losers .Hewes lost to Martinez while Rosengard beat Shulman 8-4 . Rosengard vs Kostner with Kostner winning a big score of 13-4. Hewes vs Kotik and Hewes won 10-4. Games 3 saw Derek Martinez Beating Hewes by 10-4 and Rosengard beat Shulman 8-4. Rosengard and Kostner went 9 innings and Hewes and Kotik went 7 innings while 2nd set of games went 6 innings I believe. There was one father and son duo on one team Waldron and his son;both showing outstanding athletic abilities. One June 24th Schmerler vs Rosengard in the opener and Schmerler won 8-4. However the highlight of this game was triple play on Rosengard's team .With runners on 1st and 2nd no out Rosengard got Cohen to ground out to short and Sommers started a triple play, tagging the runner as he was going to 3rd and firing to 2nd and Kostner firing to first to get the batter.A rare triple play. In the 2nd game Hewes team won 14-8.Hewes team fought back and tied at 8 in the 7th and then went ahead 14-8 to win it. July 1st saw 2 games .In the opener Rosengard vs Schmerler and schmerler's team won 4-3 ina close contest. In game 2 it was Appell vs Hewes. The Hewes team moved ahead 15-12 .In the bottom of the 8th Appell's team went ahead 16-15.A triple by Ivan was the big hit. With the bases loaded and one out Appell got he the next two batters to end it with a pop to shallow center that Ivan raced in to catch and runners held and the he got the final out a called third strike. Appell's team won 16-15

>Recap of the games since June10th June 17-FATHERS DAY-There was ahuge turnout ,over 32 players so Havelock deligently worked out 4 team lineups and pitching matchups-all in 10 minutes and we split up into two feilds. In Field 1 it was Rosengard vs Kostner. In this 9 inning contest Kostner got the win as her team won big , 13-4.In field #2 it was Hewes vs Kotik and Hewes won this one in 7 innings 10-4.Then the winners played the winners and losers the losers. In the next week June 24 we played 2 games .In game 1 it was Schmerler vs Rosengard and Schmerler won 8-4. The highlight in this game was a RARE TRIPLE PLAY on Rosengard's team.Cohen grounded to short with no outs and runners on 1st and 2nd. Sommers fielded the hard grounder and tagged the runner going to 3rd and then fired to Kostner to force the runner at 2nd and Kostner fired to 1st and the throw to Kotik beat the runner to complete the triple play.In Game 2 Hewes pitched against Martinez and Hewes team losing most of the game tied the game up in the 7th at 8 all. Then went ahead in the 8th to lead 14-8 and won it 14-8 in 9 innings. Rosengard's team led3-1 but Schmerler's team scored 3 runs to move ahead 4-3 and Schmerler made it stick and won it 4-3. In Game 2 Hewes pitched against Appell. Appell was pounded hard and his team was losing 11-3.This was avery heated game verbally with with some unspotmanlike actics permeating the playing field. Cohen remarked to me as I was on first after reaching on Fielder's choice that this was fiercely competitive game;however with this said it was also a dramatic game.Appell's team mounted a 9 run rally to move ahead 12-11 mid way erasing a rout and giving Appell hope for a WIN and then Hewes team scored more and led 15-12 but Appell's team battled back and went ahead in the bottom of the 8th 16-15. Ivan a hero late in the game had a key triple as Nilva and O'Connor collided in Center. In the 9th the drama of the game came to a Shakespearian climax without the poisons but with a duel. With one out and bases loaded the infield was pulled in.Rosengard was put at 2nd base and Palma moved to Catcher as Weinberg directed the final moments as he played in shallow right field.A professional man of Blue was behind the plate in the frame and Appell had to show if he had any gas left in the tank. He got the next batter to pop to shallow Center behind 2nd base and Ivan rushed in make a shoe string grab and the runners retreated back to their bases. Then Appell dueled O'Connor and got a 3rd strike call to end it.

Another incredible day for the league as we played the French voted for a president 9hours by air away in FRANCE. A woman running lost but here in NY Rosengard(5-2) won a double header. Game 1 was a nail-biter it was Rosengard against Hewes(3-2)and the final score was 4-3.Rosengard had a great defense and he team turned double plays to get out of jams. Inserro hit a 3 run homer in the first and visitors led 4-0.Home team chipped away and Rosengard and his team killed the Home teams rally in the 7th to end it, a thriller. 2nd Game was Rosengard(5-2) and Schmerler(0-2). In this one Rosengard's visitors led but Home team rallied and led 7-4 by the 3rd.Visitors rallied with 2 outs to take the lead later 12-7 and opened the game up in a late inning to win it 18-8.So far this season there has been some outstanding defense. Phil Ciccone and Dave Summers have been great at short, Chris Rouget has been outstanding playing left and center. Inserro has been steady in center and Paul Gaughan has been steady in left. Sulliman has played great defense and Sue Kostner and Carl Weinberg are flawless turning double plays. Cohen has been steady at 1st and Schmerler has been flawless at 3rd. If I left anybody out let me know but the players are showing great effort between the chalk lines.
