SCHMERLER THE HURLER

by Gil Schmerler

Report of September 23, 2001 Contests

2 0 2 1 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 = 7

3 0 0 4 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 = 8

Normally these numbers in a box score wouldn't raise eyebrows. But this was Dobbs Ferry on a bright early fall day, and it was the pitchers - Havelock Hewes (who'd been pitching since the first inning of the first game, almost four hours earlier) against the creaky and erratic Gil Schmerler - who had the upper hand in the afternoon. Finally in the 12th, Larry Savell, screaming something about having to get home to diaper Jack, drove a hanging Schmerler curve ball well over the lonely 180 foot fence to end the ordeal and the day. Hewes, who had succumbed to Jeff Appell in a more traditional 10-6 first game victory, thus salvaged a split for the day.

The Savell blast, "his second of the game," eclipsed Tony Connors' three-homer day, two each by Bobby Naranjo and newcomer William Melindez, and solo shots by Vinnie D'Alessio, Bob Holzwasser, and Ian Lebowitz. (There may have been one or two more, but inexperienced scorers on a score sheet seemingly copied two or three times, then faxed, make it hard to tell.)

Other highlights included excellent infield play throughout the day, with Rick Tovar, Naranjo, Holzwasser, and the legendary Bill Weinberg contributing more than their share; more successful backhanded short hop pickups by first basemen than ever in league history; and an intriguing between-inning massage of sore shortstop Tovar by a professional masseuse.
