A FLAIR FOR THE VERNICKULAR
Game Recap For July 15th (Our usual reporter Dave Rosengard is currently working as a body double for the upcoming 20th Century Fox motion picture "Dating Albert Einstein".) It was a busy week for The Boys Of Summer. One finished an article for a law journal called "Defending Big Corporations: A Moral Approach". One sold a $51,000 bottle of 1933 Chateaux Lafitte, which was actually a mixture of Muscatel and Thunderbird. Most went about their jobs, figuring out ways to extend the two hour lunch without getting a painful sunburn in the process. It was indecently hot on Sunday as they all arrived at Heckscher, yet the poet-laureate of softball wore his usual long-sleeve flannel shirt. Vernick brought along his brother-in-law, Jeff Levine. Jeff freelances as Rep. Gary Condit's press agent, and stated honestly he didn’t know the whereabouts of missing intern Chandra Levy. The first game pitted The Commissioner Havelock versus Jeff Appell. Wiles versus Craft. Brute versus Strength. Coolidge versus Hoover. After 3 innings, it was tied at 1 - superior defense and caffeine-deprived bats making for a taut pitcher’s duel. Then Havelock’s team broke out for 2 runs with "Don’t Pitch It To Phil" Kotik getting a clutch hit. Appell’s team seemed listless; their Fidelity Mutual Funds on a seemingly downward trend. Suddenly, pow – a 2 out rally. Tovar, Vernick, then Danny "The Kid" all got hits - then the guy who sells "SnappleGatoradeWater" grabbed a bat and HE got a hit. Appell’s team led 5-3. But it was to be short-lived, as a few fielding miscues and some untimely walks allowed Havelock’s team to rally back, tie, and then take a 2 run lead, which held up for a brilliant 7-5 win. Same teams for the second game, which resulted in a slightly less exciting 4 inning win for Havelock’s team, 4-0. It was somewhat anti-climax, unusual for a group of individuals who are for the most part, pro-climax. |
